Romanian language courses for foreigners

The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) is organizing Romanian language courses for foreigners this year. The extensive courses, in-person or online, will be organized in Bucharest as from February 2, 2026 for all levels, from beginners to advanced learners, in accordance with the provisions of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The registration period for Session I is January 12-23, 2026, and the course duration is February 2 – April 2. The level assessment test (written and oral) takes place between January 21-23, at 12:00, online/by e-mail (participants who don’t know the  Romanian language – level A1 – or those who continue their courses at ICR will not take the level assessment test).

The registration period for Session II is April 6-17, and the course duration is April 27 – July 2. The level assessment test (written and oral) takes place between April 13-15, at 12:00, online/by e-mail (participants who don’t know the Romanian language – level A1 – or those who continue their courses at ICR will not take the level assessment test).

The registration period for Session III is September 7-18, and the course duration is: September 21 – November 26. The level assessment test (written and oral) takes place between September 16-18, at 12:00, online/by e-mail (participants who don’t know the Romanian language – level A1 – or those who continue their course will not take the level assessment test).

In-person courses are held at the Romanian Cultural Institute, Biserica Amzei Street, no. 21-23, Sector 1, Bucharest.

Each module consists of 40 hours of courses. Groups are composed of 10-15 participants, with a minimum number of 10 participants required to form a group.

To assess their Romanian language proficiency, participants will take a level test (written and oral) which will determine their group assignment.

The cost is 1,000 lei (about 200 euros) for a 40-hour online/in-person module. The fee includes the level assessment test and course materials. The participation fee for each module should be paid in full after receiving the confirmation of the group formation. The participant’s full name and the “Romanian Cultural Institute” should be mentioned on all documents related to the bank transfer process. The bank commission charged for transferring the participation fee will be paid by the participant.

Conditions for withdrawal from the course:

If you notify the Romanian Cultural Institute – Romanian Language Department, in writing, by sending an e-mail to limbaromana@icr.ro, before the start of the course, you will receive the paid amount, minus 10% of the fee.  If you notify the Romanian Cultural Institute – Romanian Language Department, in writing, by sending an e-mail to limbaromana@icr.ro, within the first week after the course begins, you will receive the paid amount, minus 25% of the fee.  After the first week of courses, no refund will be made.

The Romanian Cultural Institute does not assume responsibility for granting visas in the case of non-EU citizens who apply for a visa. Also, the Institute does not provide accommodation for the participants attending Romanian language courses held in Bucharest and does not issue letters of acceptance for courses.

At the end of each course session, participants will receive a diploma certifying the completion of the respective course, its level and duration. This document cannot be used as a language proficiency certificate required for obtaining Romanian citizenship.  

Examination sessions are organized in Bucharest as well as at the Romanian Cultural Institute’s representative offices abroad and at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, for people who want to get a certificate of linguistic competence in the Romanian language with international accreditation.
