During the first 8 months of 2026, the General Inspectorate for Immigration carried out 4,246 operations, inspections and checks at national level, both with their own forces and in cooperation with other institutions with responsibilities in the field. These activities focused on compliance with legislation regarding the status of foreign nationals and identifying instances of illegal stay or undeclared work.
As a result of these operations, 5,442 foreign nationals were found to be in an illegal situation, of which 4,433 men and 1,009 women. Some 3,666 benefited from Article 2 of Emergency Ordinance No. 32/2026, which allows them to regularize their irregular stay without facing sanctions. The majority originate from Nepal (1,731 individuals), Sri Lanka (1,107), and India (368).
For non-compliance with legal provisions, immigration police officers issued 1,135 return decisions, granting a voluntary departure period of 15 or 30 days. The primary reasons were the detection of illegal stay (461 cases), requests for voluntary departure (433 cases), and the denial of residence right extensions (100 cases). Additionally, 352 individuals were removed under escort. Of these, 153 were removed due to the risk of absconding, 93 failed to comply with the return decision, and 71 had crossed or attempted to cross the border illegally. During the same period, 182 foreign nationals were placed in public custody centres pending the completion of legal procedures.
