In the first quarter of 2026, the Satu Mare County Immigration Office, in north-western Romania, saw a surge in applications, particularly for work purposes, driven by growing employer demand for workers from third countries. A total of 1,391 applications were received, of which 1,118 were for the issuance of work permits. Of these, 880 were resolved positively, 68 were rejected, and 170 are pending.

In terms of curbing illegal residence, 5 foreigners were detected in illegal situations: 4 were working without valid legal permits and one was found to be staying illegally. Additionally, a voluntary return decision was issued. A total of 34 individual employment contract terminations for foreign citizens were recorded. An awareness-raising activity was carried out for employers in the county, the information being disseminated to 35 companies across the county.

On March 31, 2026, there were 1,426 foreign nationals holding a valid right of residence, with a domicile/residence declared in Satu Mare county: 410 came from Nepal, 255 from Bangladesh, 161 from Sri Lanka, 83 from Pakistan, 80 from India, 75 from Ukraine, 52 from the Republic of Moldova, 43 from the USA and 40 from China. Broken down by purpose of stay, 1,069 foreigners from third countries are in Romania for work, 208 for family reunification, 101 hold permanent residency, 32 are under temporary protection and 2 are studying.
