The main reasons why foreign nationals chose Romania, implicitly Iaşi county, were the possibility of studying at universities in Iaşi and access to the labor market. Other reasons were the performance of religious, professional or volunteer activities. There were also cases of family reunification for foreigners who are family members of Romanian citizens or foreigners established in Romania as sponsors. Immigration police officers issued 3,729 residence permits last year, of which 3,686 for temporary residence and 43 for long-term residence. At the level of the Immigration Service of Iaşi county, 460 temporary protection permits were issued for Ukrainian citizens, 348 of these permits were reissued.

In terms of the foreigners’ access to the Romanian labor market, 3,006 applications for employment permits have been registered in Iaşi county and 2,519 permits have been issued. Also, 471 applications have been rejected for non-compliance with the legal conditions.

Combating illegal residence and undeclared work has been a priority for immigration police officers in Iaşi county. 15 foreign citizens in illegal situations have been detected, most of them from Pakistan, Nepal and the Republic of Moldova. In 2025, immigration police officers issued 43 return decisions with voluntary departure within 15 or 30 days. 16 decisions were issued for illegal residence, 12 as a result of the cancellation of the right of residence or the revocation of the entry visa, and 5 for the refusal of the right of residence extension. 10 decisions for return under escort were issued as a result of a risk of absconding. A total of 24 foreign citizens were banned from entering the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, for periods ranging from 6 months to 5 year
