Annual report of the immigration police officers

Immigration police officers in Romania have been constantly working to prevent illegal residence and undeclared work. In 2025, the General Inspectorate for Immigration carried out some 7,000 checks and inspections at national level, both with its own employees and in collaboration with other institutions with responsibilities in the field. The activities were related to the compliance of legislation on the regime of aliens and were aimed at identifying situations of illegal residence or undeclared work.

Immigration police officers in Romania have been constantly working to prevent illegal residence and undeclared work. In 2025, the General Inspectorate for Immigration carried out some 7,000 checks and inspections at national level, both with its own employees and in collaboration with other institutions with responsibilities in the field. The activities were related to the compliance of legislation on the regime of aliens and were aimed at identifying situations of illegal residence or undeclared work.

2,527 foreign citizens were found in illegal situations, of which 2,000 men and 527 women. Most of them came from Nepal (496 people), the Republic of Moldova (360) and Sri Lanka (314).

For non-compliance with legal provisions, immigration police officers issued 2,246 return decisions, with a voluntary departure deadline of 15 or 30 days. The main reasons were the request for voluntary departure in 662 cases, the refusal to extend the right of residence in 341 cases and the identification of 707 cases of illegal residence. Also, 661 people were removed under escort. 204 of these had crossed or attempted to cross the border illegally, and 123 did not comply with the return decision. In the same time span the same, 537 foreigners were placed in public custody centers, until the completion of legal procedures.
